i felt it coming for years and today it finally yet horrifically came .maybe it was a worry i had and not a feeling .i’m talking about every dog owners worst fear .having their dog hit by a car .in this case it was a truck
.i woke up here in my grandmas house as i have for the last six days being evacuated due to hurricane ike .way to early for me but i knew the dogs needed out and so i got up and slipped on my shoes and took cow out first .he went and sniffed half grass and all of the trees .peed on most of it .pooped then came in when i called him .then it was sergeant’s turn outside .now my grandma’s front yard is about an acre .it’s a big yard so i don’t (well didn’t) feel then need for a leash .and am i ever kicking myself now for not having leashed him .he went off smelling things and peeing on most of it .then i saw him going down the driveway toward the rode .i took off after him yet he was in his prancing jot which is like a fast jog for me .so i picked up my speed .sargent now at the roads edge me still running toward him .and our of the corner of my eye i see a truck rounding the bend .that’s the moment that haunting feeling i’d had for years roared up and consumed me .i knew it was going to happen and there wasn’t a thing i could do about it
sargent let the side of the rode not knowing what was speeding on its way .i was still fifty feet back not knowing what to do to keep what i knew was going to happen from happening .sargent made his way to the far side of the rode into the lane where the truck was .the man in the truck honked his horn and braked hard but not hard enough to stop .he was going about 30mph when he hit sargent .i feared he was dead after having seen him hit .hearing the thud that will surly torment my nightmares .he rolled under the truck and was about 25 feet further down the rode then where he was struck .i saw no movement .making it worse it was all playing out in slow motion .then .he sat up and immediately stared yelping in a shrill crying out of pain and for help
.i feared he’d have to suffer till his slow death .i rushed in the road and motioned to the oncoming van to stop while i picked sargent up and held him tight trying to comfort him .his yelping still continuing but growing softer .i placed him on the grass off to the side of the driveway where i had hastily rushed .he was sitting up and i didn’t take my hands off him .still trying to comfort him quietly telling him “you’re ok sargent .you’re ok” .softly stroking his fur trying to visually asses his wounds .one between his eyes only raised up toward his forehead .another on the right side on his brow line .and the worst being the cut beside his left eye
the man driving the truck had continued a little distance down the road while coming to a complete stop .he backed up and pulled in the drive next to me and asked how the dog was .i wanted to say “he’s fine” because i wanted him to be fine .but i responded “i don’t know” while tearing up .i knew the man felt bad any one with any amount of decency would feel bad after hitting someone’s dog .i picked sargent up .he now was no longer whimpering only shaking .i stepped over to the mans truck and told him i knew it wasn’t his fault (i truly believe it wasn’t) . shook the man’s hand and walked up the long driveway holding a shaking dog under my arm
i brought him to the closed in back porch were he has been staying .asked my dad who was eating break feast if we had anything to clean his cuts and i remembered i had brought peroxide and i rushed to get it and came back and cleaned his wounds .pressed all of his bones and he didn’t flinch or yelp .only lay there .he started hacking something up as dogs do and i wanted to make sure it wasn’t bloody so i tried to open his mouth only for him to let out a loud yelp
