i really want one but the budget models cost 5 thousand dollars .and the nice ones capable of cutting things are 30 thousand .there is a company called epilog lasers which makes the nice 30 thousand dollar models .what i don't understand is how a small machine like that can cost so much and a CNC plasma cutter capable of cutting a piece of steel 8' by 4' only cost 10 thousand .of coarse the plasma cutter isn't able to engrave but i think it'd be more able to make more things then a laser engraver .but of coarse i want them both
i do have a small shot in the dark and that needle in the haystack called a laser engraver .a very awesome website called instructables.com is having a contest where the grand prize is epilog lasers newest model of cutter .you have to enter something an "awesome project with a green twist" .i'm not sure if i'm capable of epic but i know i can do green .i hate spending money on new materials when you can just find the materials you need laying around .i suppose i could enter the boomerang and jewelry box i'm making out of oak that i got from the fire wood pile .i know i'm going to need a lot of luck and i guess prayers wouldn't hurt either but i don't know if it's something god should be bothered over

I think it's the laser tube that makes the CO2 engraving systems more expensive...Somewhere I saw that the Zing Laser starts just under $8,000 - that's about the lowest I've seen for a more compact model that engraves AND cuts. Good luck on the contest - should definitely be some cool entries!
